Roberts, Louter Lead W Soccer To 10th Win

10/22/2016 7:35:00 PM

Box Score Kaley Roberts continues to make a strong case to be named the Rookie of the Year in MIAC Women's Soccer. If there was such a thing as Sophomore of the Year, Arendje Louter would be a great candidate for that as well.

Roberts, a freshman, scored twice on feed from Louter and the latter nailed a penalty kick to lift Hamline to an important 3-1 win over St. Benedict Saturday afternoon at Paterson Field. Hamline hit double digits in wins for just the fourth time in the history of the women's soccer program with a 10-4-1 overall mark. The Pipers won 10 games in 2011 and 12 the following season.

Eve more important, HU is now 4-4-1 in MIAC play. That is good for 13 points and a tie the sixth -- and final -- playoff spot with St. Benedict and St. Catherine. The Pipers are just one point behind fifth place Macalester and two behind fourth place Gustavus Adolphus -- who they will face on the final day of the season.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves.

The Pipers hadn't defeated the Blazers since 2007. Many of those games were agonizing one goal decisions. After a scoreless first half, Roberts struck first, converting Louter's pass for a goal at 47:37. 10 minutes later, the pair connected again with Roberts scoring her team leading ninth goal of the season and it was 2-0. The freshman is fourth in the league in goals with nine and tied for fifth in points with 25.

CSB replied quickly, scoring a mere 31 seconds later to make ti 2-1. It went back and forth from there until Louter was awarded a penalty kick at 75:27. The sophomore converted it for her eighth goal of the year -- and stretch her current streak to four consecutive games. Amy Ramras took care of the rest of it, making four saves in goal to earn the win.

Hamline will continue its quest for a first-ever playoff berth with games next Wednesday, October 26 at Bethel (11-4-1, 6-3 MIAC). Game time is 3:30 p.m. They will host the Gusties at Paterson for the season finale on Saturday, October 29. Game time that day with be 11:00 a.m.
