Box Score The final score -- 3-0 -- was not indicative of how competitive Hamline's volleyball team was against Gustavus Adolphus Wednesday night at Hutton Arena. The Pipers dropped 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 sets to drop to 11-10 overall, 4-6 in the MIAC. In the process, though, they frequently stood toe-to-toe with the Gusties, who are 21-6 overall and 9-1 in conference action.
Morgen Coleman, for one, continued to impress with a double-double of 20 assists and a team high 14 digs. The freshman also had a game high three service aces.
Julia Zolnosky joined Coleman in the double up category with a team high dozen kills and 13 digs.
Amelia Jensen, playing in her 100th game as a Piper, also had 13 digs. The Gusties opened up a five point lead in the first set only to see HU shave it to 22-20 before giving way.
In the second set, GAC bolted to a 9-2 lead. Hamline bounced back with a similar run to tie the game at 11. GAC pushed the lead to 22-13 and Hamline responded with four of the next five points to get within six. But that was as close as they could get. The third set rocked back and forth with four lead changes and 10 tie scores. When HU inched ahead 12-10, Gustavus responded with four straight points. The Pipers, however, refused to give in and tied the score at 17. It was then knotted at 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23 before the Gusties came up with the final two points to claim the match.
The Pipers close out the regular season Saturday, October 29 against St. Catherine at Hutton Arena. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
