Smith Has Big Night For Men's BB

11/18/2016 10:05:00 PM

Box Score It hasn't taken Zach Smith long to heat up to the new men's basketball season. The junior guard poured in a career high 32 points -- including a remarkable 14-15 from the free throw line -- in Hamline's 86-82 loss at Wis-Superior Friday night. Connor Knutson added a dozen  but the Pipers fell to a late Yellowjacket rally and evened their record for the season at 1-1.

HU led most of the way. It was 39-34 at halftime and the Pipers stretched it as wide as 12 points in the second half. UWS, however, was determined on its home floor to take the lead and did so at 76-75 on a three-point play with 2:51 left. Smith's two free throws gave HU an one-point edge at 77-76 but UWS retaliated by scoring the next six points and held on for the decision.

Smith leads the MIAC in the early going in Field Goals Made(17) and Free Throws (22) and is second in Points Per game at 29.5. Friday's outburst marked the third time the 5-10 guard had scored 30 points or more in a game. Oddly, they have all come on the road. Last year, Smith had 30 in a game at Carleton and 31 at Gustavus Adolphus.

Dylan See-Rockers led the board patrol with seven rebounds with Smith, TC Robinson and Ethan Scheuring adding five each. The Pipers also had seven steals with Robinson topping the charts with a pair.

HU will stay in the Badger state overnight and head to Ashland on Saturday to face Northland (1-0). The Lumberjacks defeated Lakeland, 85-79, in their season opener. A  game scheduled for Friday night at Bemidji State was postponed due to weather conditions.
