Smith Gets Career High in OT Loss at Carleton

Box Score Zach Smith unloaded a career high 30 points and Connor Knutson added 24 as Hamline's men's basketball team chased Carleton into overtime before dropping an 81-75 decision in Northfield Monday. 

The sophomore guard scored the last six HU points in the second half and the first two of the overtime period. He added a game high five assists and five rebounds for the Pipers, who are now 4-17 overall, 2-14 in the MIAC. Knutson also had five rebounds. Quinton Garvis led the Piper board attack with seven.

It was an uphill fight all night for Hamline. The Knights scored the game's first five points and finished the first half with a 32-28 advantage. The Pipers came out swinging at the start of the second half and gained their first lead when Knutson hit a three-pointer for a 42-40 edge with 12:52 remaining. HU worked to a five-point advantage at 49-44 only to see the Knights get seven of the next nine points to retie the game at 51. There were eight ties in all in the second half, which ended at 67 all. 

Smith's two free throws gave HU a 69-67 edge in the extra session. Carleton scored the next seven points. HU got the game back within two at 77-75 with 29 seconds left. The Knights hit four free throws to finish off the scoring. 

Hamline, which is in a stretch where they play five games in 10 days, shot 42 per cent (25-60) from the field and 19-23 from the free throw line. Carleton  hit 45 per cent from the field (26-58) and 22-34 from the free throw line. 

HU returns to Hutton Arena Wednesday to face Concordia (14-8, 11-6 MIAC). Game time is 5:45 p.m.
