Pipers Erupt For 7th Straight M Soccer Win

9/19/2016 6:30:00 PM

Box Score 48 hours after setting a school record for consecutive wins, the Hamline men's soccer team added to the mark with style. The Pipers stretched their school-record winning streak to seven straight with an 8-0 victory over Bethany Lutheran Monday at Paterson Field. Patrick Murray, playing his first game for HU, had two second half goals and an assist to lead a Piper offense that held an edge of 30-6 in total shots and a whopping 18-2 in shots on goal.

Adam King, Jake Niemann, Trevor Lewellen, Ben Sorenson, Ryan Pyle (pictured) and Junior Salguero-Solis also scored to improve Hamline's overall record to 7-1 and their home field standard to 5-0. The team's sixth straight shutout was shared by the three goalies. Dean Isaacson played the first half, earned the win and stretched his personal scoreless streak to 480:35. Malachy Zamacona and Peter Griggs had one save apiece in the second half.

The game started quietly with little action  near the net in the first 20 minutes of play. King changed all that with his fourth goal of the year at 11:28. 10 minutes later, Niemann nailed his second penalty kick marker -- and third overall tally of the season. Lewellen followed suit late in the half to make it 3-0 at intermission.

Sorenson opened the floodgates five minutes into the second half. Murray, who played just 25 minutes overall, added a pair and Pyle and Salgeuro-Solis delivered singles. The eight goals were a season high, topping a 7-0 win over Crown on the same field 12 days ago.  Hamline has now outscored their opponents, 24-3, on the season.

The Pipers moved up a notch to sixth place in the latest NSCAA D-III North Region poll.

The Pipers now return to MIAC play Friday, September 23 at Macalester (rated first in the same regional poll and seventh in the entire country). Game time is 7:30 p.m.
