W Soccer Earns a Big Point at Bethel

10/10/2017 6:24:00 PM

Box Score In a tight race, every point is crucial. The Hamline women's soccer team would likely agree after earning a point in a 2-2 double OT draw at Bethel Tuesday. Kaley Roberts and Ashlee Olson had the goals with Kat Armstrong recording six saves in goal as HU remained in the thick of the playoff battle with a 3-3-1 MIAC mark. That places them in a tie for sixth place -- the final conference playoff spot -- with Gustavus Adolphus.

Both teams are just one point behind fifth place St. Catherine and three back of fourth place St. Benedict. HU still has games remaining against all three of those schools.

The afternoon started on a bright note. Roberts redirected an Arendje Louter corner kick into the net just 1:42 into the game to give the Pipers the lead. It was the sophomore's ninth goal of the season, tying her 2016 totals. The tally also moved her into a tie for fifth with KC Heaney (2003-05) on the school's all-time goals list with 18. The Royals tied the game later in the half.

20 minutes into the second half, Roberts slipped the ball to Olson (4), who shot through traffic for her fourth goal of the season. Roberts now has 21 points on the year, which is good for a tie for second in the MIAC.

The Royals, however, came back to tie the game with 11 minutes left in regulation time.

Both teams tightened up from there. Armstrong's six saves gave her 60 on the season, second among all MIAC netminders.

Hamline (6-5-2 overall) returns to action Saturday against St. Mary's (5-7-1, 0-6-1 MIAC) at Paterson Field. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
