10/20/2017 5:36:00 PM

Box Score Guillermo Bonilla couldn't have picked a better time to get his first college goal. The freshman forward took a pass from Trevor Tallaksen, broke in alone and drilled a shot home at 4:24 of overtime to lift the Hamline men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at St. John's Friday. The win stretched the Pipers' current unbeaten string to six games (5-0-1) and upped their MIAC record to 6-2-1. The dramatic win kept HU in third place in the MIAC with 19 points and guaranteed they will have at least one home conference playoff game when the tournament gets under way October 31. They trail second place Macalester by two points.

The top two teams get a first round bye. The third and fourth place teams (currently Gustavus Adolphus is 4th) host first round playoff games on Tuesday, October 31.

Bonilla shared the hero honors with sophomore goalie Malachy Zamacona, who recorded seven saves for his third consecutive shutout. The North St. Paul, Minn. native lowered his goals-against average to 0.66 on the season and has not allowed a goal in his last 316:55 of action.

It was an even battle from the start. Hamline finished with a 19-17 edge in overall shots and a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams, however, had excellent scoring chances only to be rebuffed by Zamacona and his opposite number, Payton Spencer, in the SJU goal.

Bonilla, Adam King and Jack Reddan were the top shooters for HU with three each. At the other end, Zamacona had three first half saves and four more in the second session.

The win improved Hamline's overall record to 11-4-1. They wrap up the regular season Tuesday, October 24 against Gustavus Adolphus at Paterson Field. A win there would tie the school record for most wins in a season ever for a men's soccer team.

Game time is 3:30 p.m.
