Men's BB Drops MIAC Opener

Box Score Zach Smith scored 12 points and Isaac Brooks added 11 but Carleton used an edge in rebounding to its advantage to forge a 70-60 victory in Northfield on Wednesday in the MIAC opener for both teams. 

Hamline shot 45 percent from the field but dropped to 2-2 overall. 

Smith, a senior guard, also had a team high four assists and tied with Kalu Abosi for the team lead with four rebounds. 

After being down 9-2, HU roared back to take a 14-13 lead on a Bret Lukes layup midway through the first half. Smith followed with a basket to make it 16-13 but the Knights responded with eight unanswered points for a 21-16 edge and maintained the lead the rest of the night. 

It was 29-25 at halftime. After the lead expanded to 15 points in the second half, HU fought back getting as close as 6 points at 63-57 with 1:43 to play. The Knights made their foul shots down the stretch to close out the verdict. In addition to Smith and Brooks' offensive showings, Jay Betts added eight points. 

Hamline returns to Hutton Arena on Saturday afternoon to host St. Thomas (3-1, 1-0 MIAC). Game time is 1:00 p.m.
