Box Score A second half offensive outburst plus a solid defensive effort lifted the HU men's basketball team to a 66-61 win at Cal Lutheran Thursday in Thousand Oaks, California.
Zach Smith scored 16 points with
Isaac Brooks kicking in 14,
Dylan See-Rockers 11 and Kalu Abosi (pictured) added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds as HU moved within a game of .500 at 4-5 overall with the comeback victory.
Three-pointers by See-Rockers and
TC Robinson helped HU erase a four point halftime deficit and grab a 40-38 lead early in the second half. The Kingsmen came back to tie the game at 44 but
Lucas Berg scored in the paint to start a 5-0 run that gave the Pipers a 49-44 advantage. The Kingsmen worked their way back to tie the game at 57, 59, and for a final time at 61 with a minute to play.
Brooks broke the tie for good with a layup with 55 seconds remaining. The Pipers forced a missed shot. Abosi hit three free throws in the waning moments to clinch the victory. The Pipers held CLU to just 31 percent from the field in the second half while clicking at a 41 percent rate offensively. Smith's 16 points moved him into 14th place in HU history with 1127 points. His six baskets gave him 400 for his HU career -- the 10th Piper ever to hit that plateau. Abosi's big night on the boards -- a season high effort -- helped the Pipers gain a 45-41 rebound edge on CLU.
Hamline goes right back on the court Friday when they meet No. 5 ranked Williams (8-1) in Thousand Oaks. Game time is 8:00 p.m. CST.
