Box Score It's not always how you start that matters in soccer. How you finish is often more important.

The Hamline women's soccer team erupted for two goals 8:23 apart in the second half and held off a late surge for a 2-1 win at Macalester Tuesday in their MIAC opener. It was the Pipers' third overall win in a row but, more importantly, it marked their first ever triumph over their Snelling Ave. rivals.

Arendje Louter scored her fourth goal of the season and Ellie Baxter picked a terrific time to record her first collegiate goal for Hamline, which is now 3-1-1 overall for first year head coach Emily Cripe

The Pipers had been close to the Scots in recent years. The last three games between the two schools had ended in double OT tie scores.

Things didn't start well Tuesday with Macalester's Kate Bond converting a free kick for a goal 22:41 into the game. The homestanding Scots kept up the pressure but HU goalie Kat Armstrong was equal to the cause and kept the game at 1-0 at halftime. The freshman netminder recorded five saves in the first half.

Louter evened matters at 51:20 with a bullet from 20 yards out. It was the junior's 19th career goal, placing her fourth all-time in school history in that department. The deadlock lasted until when Baxter, a freshman headed a corner kick from Alicia Williams into the net for the gamewinning tally.

The Scots, a preseason pick to make the conference playoffs, pressed hard. Armstrong finished with seven saves, including a dandy with 2 1/2 minutes left in the game. Hamline took seven shots, six of which went on goal. Roberts was the only HU attacker with more than one shot.

Hamline returns to action Saturday against Carleton (4-1, 0-1 MIAC) Saturday at Paterson Field. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
