The Piper women's hockey team bolted out of the gate fast and never let St. Benedict get in the game in the MIAC opener for both teams. Hamline jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first 6:05 of play and kept up the pressure from there for a 6-1 win over the Bennies in St. Cloud Thursday. HU, rated No. 4 in the country, got two goals from
Bre Simon and solo efforts from
Madison Kolbow,
Leah Schwartzman,
Courtney Koemptgen and
Dani Wright to improve to 3-0 overall.
Molly Garin, a freshman, played a key role in the win with four assists.
Kolbow started things 2:30 into the game. Schwartzman followed that with a power play effort at 4:43 and Simon broke free to make it 3-0 at 6:05. Wright connected on a power play in the second period but CSB neutralized that with a goal at 8:17. Three minutes later, Koemptgen made it 5-1 and Simon, who also had two assists, capped the night with her second of the game (and fourth of the season) later in the period.
Hamline fired 50 shots in all with Simon and
Becca Zarembinski leading the way with six each.
McKenna Hulslander played the first 46:05 in goal to earn the win with
Jaela O'Brien finishing up in her college debut.
The two teams will make a quick turnaround face off again at TRIA Rink in the Pipers' home opener on Friday, November 9 at 5:00 p.m.
