The HU men's hockey team jumped to a 2-0 lead and broke the game open late for a 4-1 win over St. John's at TRIA Rink Friday night.
Mitch McPherson had a goal and two assists as HU evened their MIAC standard at 1-1.
Goalie
Sam Nelson was superb all night, finishing with 28 saves.
Zak Lambrecht's first college goal at 17:33 of the first period have HU a lead they would not relinquish.
Weiland Parrish continued to have a hot stick, netting his fourth goal of the season early in the second period. SJU broke through late in the period to cut the lead to 2-1, setting a dramatic -- and at times, nervewracking -- third period.
McPherson provided some comfort, converting a feed from
Bailey Martin at 5:41 of the third frame. McPherson then set up
Taylor Trapp to make the game 4-1 and give the Pipers breathing room. Trapp led the Pipers' 19 shot attack with five.
HU, now 1-5 overall, takes on Gustavus Adolphus next weekend. The teams meet at TRIA Rink November 16 and will have a rematch the next night in St. Pater.
