It was the type of struggle you might expect out of two top women's hockey teams who battled into overtime seven weeks ago.
Hamline won that encounter, 5-4. This time, however, it ended in a tie.
Jordan Hansen's power play goal with 5:41 left in the third period gave Hamline a 2-2 tie with Wisconsin-Eau Claire at TRIA Rink Monday night.
Bre Simon had the other goal for HU, which shook off a 2-0 first period deficit and ended up outshooting the Blugolds by nearly a 2-1 margin.
The visitors jumped to their lead in the first 9:23 of play. It was an even period with HU holding a slim 10-9 margin in shots on goal. The second period was fairly even as well with the Pipers unloading seven shots to the Blugolds' six. Simon got HU on the board, finishing off as play that started with Hansen, who passed to
Dani Wright who fed Simon for her ninth goal of the season.
Hamline upped the tempo in the third period, outshooting WEC, 18-5. Hansen eventually tied matters during a scramble.
Leah Schwartzman and Simon were her confederates who drew assists.
Each team took a penalty late in the period, leading to some nifty chances at both ends of the ice.
McKenna Hulslander was stout in her end of the ice, making 19 saves in all.
In the end, neither team could score. HU, now 8-1-1, held a 40-21 edge in shots on goal in their final game of the 2018 party of their schedule. The Pipers, rated No. 6 in the latest d3hockey.com Top Ten poll, are off until Thursday, January 3 when they face St. Anselm at TRIA Rink. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
