Box Score It was a farewell to remember.
Zach Smith scored 24 points with six assists and six steals and
Nick Powell (pictured) added 17 markers as the Hamline men's basketball team took charge and rolled to a 98-72 win at St. Mary's Saturday in the final game of the 2017-18 season. The Pipers had their second consecutive overall winning season under head coach
Jim Hayes, finishing 13-12. It is the first time in six years that Hamline has had consecutive winning overall records in men's basketball.
HU went 9-11 (eighth place) in MIAC games.
Three other Pipers --
Ethan Scheuring (12),
Isaac Brooks (10) and
Dylan See-Rockers (10) also hit double figures for HU, which led 42-31 at the break and pulled steadily away in the second half. A ballhawking defense produced 17 steals. In addition to Smith, Powell, Scheuring and
TC Robinson had three takeaways apiece.
The Pipers shot a sharp 62.1 percent from the field, including 24-35 in the second half. That was the second best effort from the field all season, topped only by the 67 percent shooting HU had in the season opening win over Northwestern.
It was the final game for five seniors -- Smith, See-Rockers, Robinson, Powell and
Bret Lukes. Smith leaves with his name all over the HU career record book. The Burnsville, Minn. native ranks 11th all-time HU hoop history in points with 1384. He is third in assists (348), seventh in steals (111), eighth in field goals (494) and three-pointers (92) and ninth in free throws made at 305.
