Box Score It was, all in all, a day to remember for the seniors of the Hamline's men's basketball team.
Before Saturday's game with Gustavus Adolphus, the five seniors and their families were honored and recognized by a large crowd. After a slow start, the Pipers turned on the heat and handed the Gusties an 85-74 defeat.
Zach Smith -- one of the seniors honored -- scored 19 points. Classmates
TC Robinson and
Dylan See-Rockers added 18 and 11 respectively to help HU move within a game of .500 overall at 10-11 (6-10 MIAC).
Isaac Brooks, a junior, kicked in a dozen for Hamline, which erased a 15-point first half deficit to earn the win.
HU trailed by 21-6 eight and a half minutes into the game. Three pointers by Smith, See-Rockers and
Ethan Scheuring began the process of whittling away the Gusties' advantage. Scheuring hit a pair of free throws with 1:30 left in the half to give HU a 31-30 lead. A jumper by
Will Hoiseth in the final minute of the half sent Hamline to the locker room with a 33-31 lead.
The Pipers came out gunning in the second stanza. They broke from the gate with a 11-2 spurt to grab a double digit lead and kept the Gusties at bay the rest of the way. GAC did not go quietly, though. They got within five at 74-69 with four minutes left. HU responded with a
Bret Lukes three-pointer and a
Nick Powell layup (they were the two other seniors honored) to regain a 10-point edge.
In addition to his offense, See-Rockers had seven rebounds (as did Scheuring). Smith was giving and taking with seven assists (moving him into third place all time with 333) and a pair of steals.
At halftime, Al Frost '67 was honored with a place on the school's Row of Honor on the North wall of Hutton Arena.
HU gets back in action Monday, February 5 when they play at Macalester. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
