Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Five Goal Third Period Seals Big Win For W Hockey

Hamline erupted for five third period goals to defeat St. Olaf, 8-0, in a women's hockey game in Northfield Friday night.

The big win -- the most lopsided of the season -- pushed the team's unbeaten streak to 10 games in a row and upped the overall record to 13-1-2. HU, ranked seventh in the latest d3hockey.com poll, is 7-0-1 in MIAC play and is in second place, two points behind St. Thomas, who also won on Friday.

Leah Schwartzman continues to wield one of the hottest sticks in all of college hockey. The senior stretched her consecutive game streak with a goal to six and added three assists. Katie Carlson scored twice with Rae Robert, Olivia Arkell, Molly Garin, Jordan Hansen and Bre Simon adding solos.

Jaela O'Brien had nine saves to earn the shutout -- and the win -- in goal. The freshman has allowed just one goal in 241:17 of playing time and has a microscopic goals-again average of 0.25.

Carlson had the lone goal of the first period. In the middle frame, Robert's power play marker at 3:49 made it 2-0 and Schwartzman connected late in the period for a 3-0 bulge. Arkell got the third period deluge started just 2:24 into the frame. Garin and Carlson had power play goals that sandwiched a Hansen tally. Simon, the leading scorer in D-III women's hockey in the country at 15 goals and 19 assists, finished things off late in the game.

Hamline unloaded 58 shots on goal, led by Schwartzman (nine) and Garin (eight).

The teams face off again on Saturday, January 19 at TRIA Rink. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
