Things heated up at the finish but the Hamline men's soccer team came up just short, losing 3-2, to Gustavus Adolphus in their Paterson Field finale for the 2019 season Tuesday.
For the second straight season,
Seif El-Fatairy scored on a penalty kick against the Gusties and
Ben Sorenson connected as well. However, the visitors, who are tied with St. Thomas for first place in the conference, were just a bit more proficient on offense.
After a scoreless first half, the pace picked up considerably. The Gusties scored a pair of goals 10 minutes apart for a 2-0 advantage. El-Fatairy halved that margin with his PK effort at 70:57. GAC got that one back at 79:30 but the two goal margin only lasted for a couple of minutes.
The reason for that was Sorenson took a long pass from
Ryan Pyle and worked his way in close for a goal to set up a hectic finish. Hamline pressured but the Gusties countered and held them off long enough to gain the win. HU goalie
Malachy Zamacona recorded eight saves (four in each half) to run his league leading total to 76 for the season.
Hamline is now 3-11-1 overall, 1-8-0 in MIAC play. The Pipers wrap up the season Saturday, November 2 at Augsburg. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
