Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

VB Takes Oles To Five Sets

On a night when the Hamline volleyball team honored one of the most versatile athletes in recent school history, the Pipers showed they have a lot of grit. Hamline rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth game before falling to the highly touted Oles, 3-2, at Hutton Arena.

Before the match, the team honored Morgen Coleman (5), the team's lone senior. Coleman, who holds the school record for Service Aces in a career (166), is just the second person ever to record over 1,000 Assists and 1,000 Digs. She added to the latter total with 17 as part of a 98 dig effort Wednesday A member of the Piper basketball team, the North Branch, Minn. native has not missed a game ijn either sport in her career here.

Madison Hurrle led the offense with 19 Kills and Sydney Larson was close behind with 17. Megan Rubbelke surpassed the 900 mark for Assists in a season with 45. The junior is fifth in the MIAC with 944. Gabby Robinson had a terrific night on the back wall with 31 Digs (plus 10 Kills). Coleman and Maggie Gavic added 17 apiece and Rubbelke completed another double-double with 16.

The two hour plus match saw 14 lead changes and 29 tie scores.

The Oles pulled away late for a 25-21 opening set win and followed it up,with a 25-17 second set triumph. Hamline fought off a match point and grabbed a 27-25 third set win to keep their streak alive of not being swept in a MIAC match this season. In the fourth set, the Pipers jumped in front early and didn't let the Oles catchy up for a 25-18 win.

The deciding set started tight with the teams tying at 1, 2 3, 4, and 5. The Oles inched ahead 8-5 and went on to a 15-9 win to drop the Pipers to 12-14 overall, 2-8 in MIAC play. Half of those league setbacks were five setters.

HU will look for win No. 13 to better last season's total in their season finale Saturday, November 2 against Macalester. Game time at Hutton Arena is 3:00 p.m.
