ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline men's hockey team (2-6-1, 1-3 MIAC) scored a tying goal in the final minute of regulation against St. Olaf (1-7-0, 1-3 MIAC) on Saturday night, but saw the Oles score seconds into overtime to come away with the 4-3 win at TRIA Rink.
Three different Pipers scored in the contest, with junior
Jake Cass getting HU on the board in the first period, scoring on a power play with a minute and half left in the period. This was Cass' first goal of the season and he was assisted by
Jackson Bond and
Bailey Martin.
Hamline had another good chance to score at the end of the first period and into the second, as St. Olaf was penalized with a major penalty at 18:53 in the first. However, the Oles found a way to score shorthanded during that penalty to tie the game up 1-1 at 3:21 in the second frame.
St. Olaf scored again about ten minutes later to take over the lead at 3-2. The Pipers answered back this time, however, as junior
Zak Lambrecht scored his third goal of the season less than a minute later to tie the game at 2-2. Lambrecht scored off a passing sequence from
Sam Dabrowski and
Zack Taylor.
In the third, the Oles scored early, capitalizing on a power play to score five minutes in. As regulation time was expiring, the Pipers pulled their goalie, which paid off as Martin scored with less than a minute to play, which tied the game at three apiece. He was assisted by sophomore
Weiland Parrish on the play.
The excitement of the tying goal soon wore off, however, as the Oles scored 14 seconds into the overtime period to take home their first win of the season.
Senior goalie
Sam Nelson totaled 27 saves in net for the Pipers, but took the loss to move to 2-2-1 on the year.
Hamline will play next on December 3 when they travel to Houghton, Michigan to faceoff with non-conference opponent Finlandia. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
