HU holds off late Husson rally for win in Florida

NAPLES, Fla. - The Hamline women's basketball team (6-3, 2-3 MIAC) started off their Florida trip with a win, holding off Husson (4-5) for a 61-53 victory.

Senior Reilly Geistfeld compiled her third double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, four of which were offensive. She added two assists, three blocks, and two steals to fill out her stat line.

Joining Geistfeld in double figures were sophomores Chan'el Anderson-Manning and Gabby Robinson, who each had 10 points. Anderson-Manning also tallied three steals, an assist, and three rebounds and Robinson went 6-6 from the line and had five boards.

The Pipers put together a solid defensive effort in the first half, holding the Eagles to only 14 points on a 19.4 shooting percentage. This is the fewest points that HU has allowed in a half so far this season.

Hamline got off to a good start in the game with Geistfeld hitting a three to open the scoring. From there, they worked to build up their lead and a steal and layup from Anderson-Manning put the Pipers up by 10 with two minutes left in the first quarter.

HU held on to this double digit lead for the majority of the second quarter, and ended the half with a six-point run, using a bucket from first year Lydia Lecher and a pair of layups from sophomore Sarah Loken to take a 30-14 lead into the intermission.

The Eagles turned their shooting around in the second half, hitting 48.2% of their shots and 60.0% from three. This helped them mount a comeback late in the fourth quarter, as they used an 8-0 run to get the game back within seven with 4:39 left in the game.

Hamline held strong, though, not allowing Husson closer than six points and closing out the game for a 61-53 win.

The Pipers outrebounded the Eagles 46-34 in the game, but Husson capitalized on their second chances, holding a 16-11 edge in second chance points. Hamline took advantage of the Eagles' turnovers, however, scoring 19 points compared to Husson's 11 off of opponent mistakes.

HU will conclude their Florida tournament tomorrow, December 30, taking on Alma at 1:30 p.m. (CT). Check the schedule page for live stat and video links. If you follow the video link, you will need to follow the Community School of Naples in order to find the correct game.
