Top Of Order, Strong Starting Pitching Leads Piper BB To Sweep

A productive top of the batting order plus excellent starting pitching is a tough pair to beat.

Just ask Nebraska Wesleyan.

Hamline used both traits for a 6-1, 6-5 doubleheader sweep of NWU Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. Nolan Schoonveld, the leadoff batter, No. 2 swatter Cullen Buck and No. 3 batsman Zack Langton drilled out 10 hits and knocked in seven runs for the Pipers, who improved to 4-4 on the season.

On the mound, Jimmy Skroch threw a complete game five hitter in the opener abd Jake Dujmovic allowed just one run in six innings in the second game.

In the first game, HU broke a tight game open with four sixth inning runs. The Pipers batted around, stole three bases and got RBIs from Devin Rodgers, Avery Nelson and Schoonveld. Skroch took care of the rest of it, striking out eight batters.

In the nightcap, Langton and Buck drove in two runs each. Hamline broke a 1-1 tie with three second inning runs.

The Pipers continue their Tucson trip Tuesday with a nine inning game against Allegheny.
