Johnson, Schoonveld Lead Piper BB Past Cardinals

The alpha and the omega of the batting order led the Hamline baseball team over St. Mary's, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday at CHS Field. Nolan Schoonveld batting leadoff, singled, scored a run, knocked in one and stole a base and Carter Johnson, hitting ninth, had two hits, scored a run and drove in one to lead HU to the win.

The Cardinals ended the Pipers' five game winning streak with a 2-1 decision in the second game.

Schoonveld did double duty, scattering five hits throwing a complete game shutout.

The Pipers bunched together four runs in the third inning on five singles, a sacrifice bunt and a double steal. Schoonveld, who stole home on the back end of the double thievery and Johnson (pictured) had hits in the inning. In the fourth, Johnson doubled into right center for the final run of the game.

Schoonveld took it from there, using 101 pitchers, striking out four. He faced only one serious jam, retiring two batters in a row after SMU loaded the bases.

In Game 2, HU loaded the bases on three separate occasions, including nin the ninth inning. The only run, however, came in the seventh when Jake Dujmovic plated pinch runner Eric Erb with a sacrifice fly. Jimmy Skroch pitched seven scoreless innings in relief of starter Ben Resnick, who took the loss. Schoonveld had a hit in this game as well to stretch his current hitting streak to nine games in a row.

Hamline is now 12-14 overall, 4-5 in the MIAC. The Pipers are back at CHS Friday to finish a game against Concordia that was stopped last week in Moorhead due to darkness. HU has a 5-2 lead and will be batting in the top of the eighth when the game resumes at 2:30 p.m.
