Game Recap: Baseball |

BB Wins a Wild .. and Long DH ... at Augsburg

It took a while but, as Shakespeare once noted, all's well that ends well.

Just ask the Hamline baseball team, which took two very different approaches that resulted in a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg at Parade Stadium Sunday. Hamline's 1-0 in 13 inning first game win and 6-1 decision in Game 2 upped their overall record to 9-13 and improved their MIAC standard to 2-4.

The opener was an outstanding pitching duel between Hamline's Nolan Schoonveld and Augsburg's Jamie Kaye. Schoonveld allowed just three hits, walked one and fanned seven in 10 innings of work. Jimmy Skroch picked it up in the 11th, throwing three one hit innings and eventually getting the win.

In fitting with the hard day, the Pipers really scrapped to get the needed run.

Avery Johnson led off the 13th frame with a single and Dayton Gutsch ran for him. Schoonveld, who was also in the DH role, then singled to center to move Gutsch up a base. Cyle Hartwig sacrificed, moving Gutsch to third and Schoonveld to second. Cullen Buck then grounded a ball to the right side that was deep enough to allow Gutsch to score. Skroch retired the side in order, fanning the last two batters for a memorable win.

The good feeling a win like that gives apparently extended into the first inning of the nightcap. Hamline's first three batters reached base. Devin Rodgers sent one run in with a single. Jake Dujmovic drove home a second tally on a fielder's choice and Brody Russell cashed in two more with a single. The Pipers added a fifth run to give starting pitcher Evan Bayer a cushion to work with. Bayer took full advantage of this largesse with a four hitter (the only Augsburg run was unearned) with no walks and three strikeouts.

Schoonveled scored another run later in the game to cap off quite an afternoon (and early evening) in downtown Minneapolis.

Hamline heads north to Moorhead on Tuesday, April 9 to take on Concordia. HU then starts a 11 game homestand at CHS Field Thursday against Wis-Stout.
