They had to wait a couple of hours to get Meredith Field playable after over night (and morning) rains. But it was worth it to see another
Alex Molloy pitching gem. The sophomore righthander won her third game of the weekend with a complete game eight hitter as the Hamline softball team did a lot with a little in taking a 5-1 decision over Sr. Benedict in the opener of a MIAC doubleheader.
The Bennies evened the score with a 4-0 win in the second game.
Molloy is now 9-5 on the season with a puny 1.59 ERA. She walked one, struck out four and allowed only two runners to get as far as third base. As she did in her wins Friday against St. Thomas and Saturday at St. Mary's, Molloy was efficient, throwing just 97 pitches in her 12th route going effort of the season. The Oregon native helped herself in the field ,with five assists and a putout.Â
The Pipers managed just three hits, two of which came in the first inning.
Kira Krueger and
Megan Rubbelke had the hits -- both singles. HU combined those with a walk, three CSB errors and a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 first inning lead that was more than enough. CSB scored a fifth inning run but the Pipers got that one back in the sixth.Â
In the second game, Rubbelke had a pair of singles to stretch her hitting streak to seven games and raise her batting average to .400.
Delaney Kohler (pictured) also had a hit but the Pipers could manage just one other runner.Â
As a result, HU is now 12-13 overall and 5-4 in MIAC play. The latter number has them just half a game out of fourth place -- the last playoff position.Â
After playing three doubleheaders in a row, the Pipers are off until Thursday, April 11 when they play at St. Olaf.Â
