Alex Molloy tossed a complete game five hitter to reach double figures for victories in a season as the Hamline softball team defeated St. Olaf, 4-1, to earn a split of a conference doubleheader in Northfield. The Oles rallied to win the opener, 3-2.
The sophomore walked one and fanned five to improve to 10-6 on the season.
Delaney Kohler homered as part of a two hit game.
Kira Krueger also had two hits as HU kept pace in the race for a playoff spot with a 6-5 league slate. The Pipers are 13-14 overall.
Kohler opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning. Two innings later, Krueger singled a run and a second tally came in when the ball got away from the left fielder. In the fifth,
Anna O'Connor walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and danced home when the throw went awry.
Molloy took it from there to earn the win.
The decision somewhat eased the sting of a tough opening game loss. The Pipers jumped on Ole ace Julie Graf for two first inning runs without getting a hit. Kohler plated one when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A wild pitch made it 2-0.
Hamline kept the lead until a fifth inning home run off Molloy gave the Oles the lead. O'Connor walked and stole second to lead off the 7th but that was as close as the Pipers could get to tie the game.
Megan Rubbelke had a hit in each game to stretch her current hitting streak to nine games in a row.
Hamline was slated to host Concordia on Saturday, April 13 and Bethel on Sunday, April 14 at Meredith Field. A midweek snowstorm has caused both games to be postponed. No makeup date is set at this time.
