Kohler's Big Bat Helps Pipers to SB Sweep

4/19/2019 10:05:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Delaney Kohler had a very good Friday. So did the Hamline softball team, which moved into the thick of the MIAC race with a 4-2, 6-4 sweep of Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.

The Pipers improved to 9-5 in MIAC action (16-14 overall), good for a tie for fourth place -- the last playoff spot -- with Carleton.

Alex Molloy also played a big part in the double wins, using her arm and her bat to help the Piper cause.

Kohler had four hits and scored five runs as HU stretched a winning streak to four in a row.

In Game 1, GAC jumped Molloy early for a 2-0 lead. It stayed that way until the 5th when Kohler raced home on a wild pitch and Anna O'Connor had a RBI single to tie the game. One inning later, Riley Husom stroked an out single. Kohler did likewise, moving up a base when a throw failed to get Husom advancing to third. Mollor then singled them both home for what ended up the winning runs.

The sophomore, however, controlled matters on the mound, scattering seven hits for the complete game win -- her 12th of the season.

In Game 2, Kohler kickstarted a four run second inning with a leadoff double. Kira Krueger, the starting pitcher, and Husom had RBI hits in the frame. In the fifth, Kohler hit a solo homer to give HU a 5-1 lead. The Gusties stormed back to 5-4 with Mollor eventually coming in to choke off the rally. Sabrina Warden singled in an insurance run in the 7th to seal the deal. Krueger earned the win with Molloy's perfect 2.1 innings of work earning a save.

Hamline stays on the road Saturday with a doubleheader at Augsburg. The first game starts at 2:00 p.m.
