Nolan Schoonveld was a two-pronged threat for the Hamline baseball team Thursday at Carleton. The senior rapped out a pair of hits and earned the pitching victory as HU held off the Knights for a 4-3 victory in the opener of a doubleheader in Northfield.
The Knights evened matters with a 4-0 victory in the second game.
Schoonveld scattered nine hits and got help from
Evan Bayer, who retired two batters to earn a save in the lidlifter. The Pipers bunched their runs in the middle three innings with
Cullen Buck,
Zack Langton and
Devin Rodgers getting RBIs. Rodgers scored a run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch that pushed the HU lead to 4-1. The Knights came up with two in the seventh inning and had two runners on base when Bayer closed out matters.
Hamline was held to two hits in the second game and fell to 16-20 overall, 7-11 in the MIAC. HU plays at St. John;s on Saturday, May 4 for its final conference games. The season finale is the next afternoon, a nine-inning non-conference game at Bethany Lutheran.
