Box Score 2 As that great baseball mind Yogi Berra once intoned, "It's never over until it's over."
Fortunately for the Hamline baseball team, the adage proved to be true in a wild game one of a doubleheader Saturday at St. John's. The Pipers held a five run lead at one point, trailed by two in the last inning and then came back for an 8-7 win. The Johnnies grabbed some euphoria back by winning the second game, 4-3.
In game one, the Pipers came out swinging.
Nolan Schoonveld led off the game with a double. Number two hitter
Zack Langton did likewise. Later in the same inning,
Devin Rodgers and
Eric Erb belted doubles and when the smoke cleared, Hamline had a 4-0 lead. They added a third inning run on a
Jake Dujmovic RBI single. The Johnnies got a pair back in the bottom of the third and erupted for five sixth inning runs for a 7-5 lead.Â
HU responded in the seventh by loading the bases with one out.
Cullen Buck coerced a walk to force in a row. Rodgers was safe on a fielder's choice that plated the tying tally. In the eighth, Erb was plunked by a pitch, moved to second on
Carter Johnson's single, to third on an
Elliott Engen walk and came home when Schoonveld hit into a fielder's choice.Â
Will Tzavares allowed a pair of hits but then induced a game ending double play to get a hard earned win.Â
In the second game, Schoonveld had a pair of hits and Rodgers and Langton each lashed doubles but SJU rallied from a 3-2 deficit for the win.Â
Hamline is now 17-21 overall. They finish MIAC play with an 8-12 mark. The Pipers will wrap up the 2019 season Sunday with a single, nine inning game at Bethany Lutheran.Â
