That was quite an opening act for the HU men's soccer team -- and in particular, one
Logan Weller -- Friday at Paterson Field. The sophomore striker scored three goals in less than four minutes (two 15 seconds apart, believed to be a school record) as part of a six goal first half explosion en route to a 6-2 win over Lawrence in the season opener for both teams.
Adam King added two goals and an assist and
Ryan Pyle also scored as Hu took control early and never let up oin the Vikings. King's assist was the 19th of his HU career, setting a new school career record.
Hamline held a 27-11 edge in shots on goal with King unloading eight and Pyle five. KIng's eight shots were the most by a Piper in a game in eight seasons.
Pyle opened the scoring six minutes into the game. At 27:25, Weller converted a left side feed from
Theo Salzberg for his first goal. 15 seconds later, he broke free on the right side and nailed a shot into the far corner of the net. The Vikings scored quickly but Weller took advantage of a penalty kick award for his third of the game at 31:14. King added two of his own before the half ended -- the biggest output in many years for a HU side.
Lawrence responded in the second half but goalie
Malachy Zamacona, who recorded four saves for the win, had things well in hand by then.
HU stays home to face Wisconsin Lutheran on Sunday, September 8 at Paterson. Game time is 12:30 p.m.
