Strong second half propels Pipers to seventh straight win

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline women's basketball team (11-3, 6-3 MIAC) made it seven straight wins on Wednesday night with an 84-55 victory over Macalester (1-13, 0-9 MIAC). After holding only a four-point lead at halftime, the Pipers put together a strong second half, outscoring the Scots 52-27 to earn the win.

HU had 13 different players score in the contest, with four different people ending in double figures. As she had in the past three games, first year Lydia Lecher once again led the Pipers in scoring, shooting 70.0% (7-10) to end with a game-high 17 points. The only time she has put up a more efficient shooting percentage this season, was the last time that the team played Macalester, where she shot 87.5%, hitting seven of eight from the field.

Sophomore Chan'el Anderson-Manning tallied a season-high 13 points and senior Reilly Geistfeld recorded her seventh double-double (her fifth in the past six games) of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Sarah Loken joined them in double digits, also hitting a season-high with 10 points and first year Alyssa Williamson helped out the offense with a career-high four assists.

The Pipers shot well in the game, hitting 47.9% of their shots. The team shot their best in the third quarter, using a 57.9 field goal percentage to score 27 points throughout the 10 minutes.

Hamline was able to force 25 turnovers during the game, converting that into 28 points. On the other side of the court, the Pipers only committed eight turnovers of their own, which is a new season low.

HU started off the game strong, holding an 8-2 lead after the first four minutes. The Scots fought back, however, scoring the next eight points to hold a 10-8 lead with two minutes left in the quarter. Macalester would take a 13-12 lead into the following quarter.

The second quarter was back-and-forth with neither team being able to lead by more than five points. Late in the half, the Pipers used a 9-3 run to bring a 32-28 lead into the halftime break.

The second half was when the Pipers came alive, starting the third quarter on a 13-0 run to give themselves a 17-point lead. Hamline held the Scots scoreless for the first six minutes and only allowed 10 points in the whole quarter. The Pipers did not look back, continuing to build on their lead, cruising to the 84-55 final.

Junior Justine Barraza led the Scots in the game with 16 points and junior Katie Sowerby dished out seven assists.

HU will return to action this Saturday, traveling to Concordia for a 3:00 p.m. game. If you are unable to make the trip, check out the women's basketball schedule page for live stat and video links.
