Offense shines in Hamline’s 8-1 win over Bennies

Simon tallies fourth career hat trick in the win

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Hamline women's hockey team (10-3-1, 6-1 MIAC) had an impressive offensive night against Saint Benedict (7-5-1, 2-5 MIAC) on Thursday, defeating the Bennies 8-1 on the road. The win marked the most goals the Pipers have scored this season and the most since their 10-0 win over Concordia on February 1, 2019.

The Pipers had six players record multiple points in the game, being led by senior Bre Simon and sophomore Molly Garin, who had four points each. Simon had a hat trick and added an assist and Garin scored twice while dishing out two assists. The hat trick was Simon's first of the season, but fourth in her career as a Piper.

Senior Jordan Hansen, junior Madison Kolbow, and first year Madison Davis each had three points and first year Sophie Rausch had two.

HU put together a strong first period, scoring four times to jump to a 4-0 lead after the first 20 minutes. Simon scored first at 5:32, being assisted by first year Elizabeth Valley and Hanson. HU kept up the offensive pressure, scoring twice more in the next two and a half minutes.

Davis was the next to score, finishing off a play from Kolbow and junior Olivia Arkell. Simon ended the scoring frenzy with a goal at 7:55 and then added her third of the night nine minutes later to help Hamline take a big lead into the first intermission. Garin was in on the final two goals of the period, with first year Hannah Dorsey also assisting the first and Hansen also assisting the second.

In the second period, sophomore Molly Garin tacked on to the Pipers' lead with a goal of her own, being set up by Hansen and Simon. Towards the end of the period, the Bennies scored their lone goal of the night to make it 5-1 heading into the final period.

Garin got the scoring going again in the third period, scoring 26 seconds in to put Hamline up 6-1. Senior defender Zoey Lobejko had the assist on the goal. Kolbow and Rausch had the final two goals of the night, while also assisting each other. Davis was in on the final two scoring plays as well.

The Pipers held a dominant 51-12 advantage in shots throughout the contest, with sophomore Jaela O'Brien stopping 11 that came her way to earn her sixth straight.

Hamline and Saint Ben's will play the series finale tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at TRIA Rink.
