Hamline downed by Gustavus on Wednesday

ST. PAUL, Minn. - In their second meeting this season, the Hamline men's basketball team (3-13, 1-10 MIAC) fell to Gustavus (8-9, 8-4 MIAC) on Wednesday night at home. Their last matchup was decided in overtime, but this time the Gusties pulled away in the second half for an 83-69 win.

For the fourth time in the past six games, sophomore Luke Siwek put up 20+ points, hitting a new career-high tonight with a team-leading 25. He connected on 10 of 19 from the field (52.6%), which is also his fourth game in the last six where he has shot above 50.0%. He currently leads the team in field goal percentage, at 47.6% on the season.

Junior Michael Dillon added 10 points of his own with senior Lucas Berg not far behind with nine for the night. Berg and sophomore Andrew Jackson led the Pipers in rebounds, each collecting five.

The first few minutes of the game were tight, as the two teams were tied at 13-13 after the first five minutes of play. From there, the Gusties scored the next seven points unanswered to take over the lead, which they would hold onto for the remainder of the contest. HU found themselves down 10 (29-19) with eight minutes to go in the first frame, but cut that lead to five as they headed into halftime.

After the break, Gustavus controlled the game, outscoring the Pipers 42-33. A three from Siwek got the game within two early in the second half, but the Gusties used an 11-point run to give themselves some breathing room. Hamline continued to put pressure on Gustavus, but they were able to hold onto their double-digit lead for the majority of the rest of the half.

Gustavus shot an even 50% on the night for field goals, holding the edge to Hamline's 42.4%. The Gusties also dominated on the glass, holding a 45-30 advantage in rebounds, which led to 21 second chance points, compared to Hamline's six.

GAC was led by Kaleb Feahn who had 24 points and Logan Rezac who had 13 rebounds on the night.

Hamline will stay home for another conference matchup, taking on Bethel on Saturday, January 25 at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on the Hamline athletics website if you are unable to attend.
