Pipers top Oles in overtime on Wednesday night

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline men's basketball team (4-14, 2-11 MIAC) picked up their second conference win in dramatic fashion downing St. Olaf (9-10, 6-8 MIAC) 88-84 in overtime on Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

Sophomore Luke Siwek and junior Michael Dillon led the charge for the Pipers offensively, as Siwek put up a career-high 28 points on five of seven (71.4%) from downtown with six rebounds, while Dillon shot an efficient seven of 13 (53.8%) from the floor to end with 21. Siwek cashed in on nine points from the line, drawing a team-high eight fouls and Dillon led the team in rebounds on the night with eight.

Senior Lucas Berg was the final Piper in double figures ending with 12 points and junior Trey Prince tallied four points in the final minutes of regulation for HU, while also dishing out a career-high nine assists in the contest.

Both teams got out to a hot start as the Pipers and Oles had 15 and 12 points, respectively, five minutes into play.

The Pipers shot well in the first half, putting up a scorching hot 62.5 percentage from the floor overall while connecting on five of their six attempts from three. They were also stifling on defense as they limited St. Olaf to 34.5% from the floor to head into the intermission with a 13-point lead at 40-27.

The second half was all but simple as Hamline would see their lead slip away as St. Olaf came out of the locker room sharp, hitting 54.5% from the floor and knocking down eight of their 16 attempts from three. They also limited the Pipers to connecting on only 20% from beyond the arc in the half. They outscored the Pipers 49-36 to send the game into the extra frame with the game tied at 76 apiece.

In overtime, Hamline built up a seven-point lead with only 40 seconds left to play, but the Oles were not defeated yet, as they would cut that lead to three with nine seconds left to go. Siwek was fouled with seven seconds left and would make one from the line which sealed it, as St. Olaf missed their last three-point attempt and were not able to get another shot off.

Nate Albers had the hot hand for the Oles tonight as he recorded the first seven points for St. Olaf and finished with a team-best 27 points.

Hamline will have three straight road games next, first taking on #2 Saint Johns in Collegeville on February 1 at 1:00 p.m.
