WINONA, Minn. - The Hamline women's hockey team (15-3-2, 11-1-1 MIAC) used a four-goal second period to stretch their unbeaten streak to 12 straight games with a 6-1 win over Saint Mary's (6-12-2, 3-9-1, MIAC) on Friday night in Winona. The Pipers have won 11 of those 12 games, only tying Gustavus in that span of contests.
The Piper offense continues to stay hot down the final stretch of the regular season, as they have now scored five or more goals in seven of their last nine games. Their 4.45 goals per game average ranks first in the MIAC and the team has the top four leaders in points in
Molly Garin (31),
Bre Simon (30),
Sophie Rausch (26), and
Jordan Hansen (24).
Hansen was the only Piper to score twice in the game, getting the game-winning goal 41 seconds into the second period, while also adding an assist later in the game. Garin had a four-point game, assisting three goals, including Hansen's game-winner, and adding a goal of her own. Simon and senior
Dani Wright chipped in with two assists.
Junior goalie
McKenna Hulslander earned the win in net, making nine saves on the night. She is now 7-1 on the season while posting the lowest goals-against average in the MIAC at 1.11.
Hamline held an impressive 42-10 advantage in shots throughout the game, while not allowing the Cardinals to take a shot for the entire third period.
The Pipers opened the scoring early in the first as junior
Madison Kolbow scored at 2:45 to give HU a 1-0 lead. Senior defender
Zoey Lobejko assisted Kolbow on the play.
In the second period, HU's offense exploded for four goals, which included getting two goals within 15 seconds. Hansen got the scoring going with her early goal that was assisted by Garin. Saint Mary's answered with a goal of their own at 3:15 to cut Hamline's lead back to one.
Rausch regained the multiple-goal lead for HU with a goal at 5:20 assisted by Garin and then Hansen scored at 5:35 to make it 4-1. The Pipers were not done yet, as Garin would score at 8:33 to extend Hamline's lead going into the third period. Simon tallied assists on each of the last two goals for HU.
In the third, junior
Olivia Arkell took a pass from Wright and Garin and scored to put the game even further out of reach at 6-1, which would end up as the final.
The Pipers will try for their fifth conference sweep tomorrow, as they host Saint Mary's for a 2:00 p.m. contest at TRIA Rink. After the game, all are invited to stick around and skate with the Pipers.
