ST. PAUL, Minn. – The #5 Hamline women's hockey team (15-3-3, 11-1-2 MIAC) tied Saint Mary's (6-12-3, 3-9-2 MIAC) 3-3 on Saturday afternoon at TRIA Rink as the Cardinals scored two goals in the final six minutes of the third period to tie the game.
The Pipers held a 57-16 shot advantage in the contest, with three of their shots finding the back of the net and four hitting the pipe throughout the game.
Three different Pipers scored in the game with five people getting in on the assists. Senior defender
Zoey Lobejko led the team offensively with both a goal and an assist.
Saint Mary's was the only one to score in the first period, as their top scorer, Anya Hafiz, netted one with just over a minute left in the frame.
The Pipers rallied early in the second period, tying the game with a goal from junior
Olivia Arkell at 1:55, with sophomore
Molly Garin tallyin an assist on the play. Arkell now has 21 points on the year. A goal from Lobejko less than a minute later put HU up 2-1. This was Lobejko's first goal of the season, but 13
th point overall, and she was set up by first years
Sophie Rausch and
Madison Davis.
In the third, the Pipers would extend their lead to 3-1 as senior
Bre Simon scored five minutes in off passes from Lobejko and senior
Rae Robert.
The Cardinals took advantage of a powerplay with six minutes to go, getting a goal at 14:32 to make it a one-goal game. They struck again with a minute and half to play to tie it up. Neither team was able to score in the final minute, although senior
Jordan Hansen hit the pipe as the clock was winding down.
Hamline held a 3-0 shot edge in the overtime period, with Hansen hitting the pipe again, but the game would end in a 3-3 tie.
The Pipers earn one point off the tie and are now tied with Gustavus for first place in the MIAC with 24 points each. In the final two weekends, Hamline will take on St. Thomas (who is in third with 22 points) and St. Catherine and Gustavus will take on Saint Benedict and Bethel. The top two teams in the conference get to host a second-round playoff game in the MIAC tournament.
HU will play again at home on Friday, February 14 when they host St. Thomas at TRIA Rink. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
