WAVERLY, Iowa - The Hamline lacrosse team (3-0, 2-0 MWLC) continued their strong start to the 2020 season, defeating Wartburg 17-3 in Waverly on Wednesday afternoon. The Pipers took an 11-1 lead into halftime, and were able to hold onto that double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half.
 
As a team, HU held a 32-10 edge in shots throughout the contest, getting 22 of those shots on net. The Pipers also had a 14-7 edge in draw controls with senior Radian Lenz nabbing a game-high six on the day.
 
Lenz also led Hamline offensively in the game, racking up six points, with four goals and two assists. Teammate Kalley Elwell was also an offensive threat, scoring five times. Sophomore Cassidy Klinkhammer, senior Maya Hernandez, and junior Tara Westerlund all chipped in with two goals each.
 
The Pipers scored the first five goals of the game, with Hernandez getting two of those goals, within the first 10 minutes. Wartburg's only goal of the half came at 18:38, and HU answered with six straight goals to lead 11-1 at the half. Lenz and Westerlund each scored two of the team's final six goals of the half, with Elwell and senior Brayden Maas also scoring.
 
In the second half it was junior Maria Lewis who would score first for the Pipers, connecting on free position shot less than three minutes into the frame. The Knights were the next to score, but Elwell and Lenz answered for HU to put them up 14-2. Klinkhammer had two of the final three goals for HU, putting the final at 17-3.
 
Junior Alyssa Bryan-Jeffries made five saves in net, improving to 3-0 on the year.
