Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

HU wins home-opener 18-7 over Loras

Senior Kalley Elwell sets new single-game points record in the win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Hamline women's lacrosse team opened their home- as well as their conference- schedule on Saturday afternoon, defeating Loras 18-7 on a sunny day at Klas Field.

Senior Kalley Elwell set a new Hamline single-game points record in the contest, recording 10 points with eight goals and two assists. Her eight goals also tied the single-game goals record. The Pipers have only had two other players score eight goals in a game, being done by Maddie Brown against Beloit and Dana Almquist against Benedictine.

Teammate Brayden Maass also notched a new career-high in goals, scoring five for HU and senior Maya Hernandez chipped in with five points for the Pipers, setting up four goals and netting one of her own. Junior Ashley Hessler had four points with two goals and two assists, and first year Michaela Arnold was the final Piper with multiple points, scoring two goals in her collegiate debut.

As a team, the Pipers excelled in all areas of the game on the day, holding a 40-19 edge in shots and a 19-8 advantage in draw controls. Junior goalie Alyssa Bryan-Jeffries made 11 saves in net, getting her second win of the year.

It was Loras who would get the first goal of the game, as sophomore Clare Brunn scored four minutes in to give the Duhawks an early 1-0 lead. Hamline answered with the next two goals, with Hessler and Elewll scoring to help HU take over the lead at 2-1. Loras tied it up 10 minutes into the half with another goal from Brunn.

Less than a minute later, Maass started a scoring frenzy for the Pipers, who scored the next six goals unanswered to put them up 8-2. The Duhawks retaliated with two goals of their own, but Hamline scored the last five goals of the half to lead 13-4 at the break.

Hessler scored the first goal of the second half, but Loras scored the next two making it 14-6. Hamline crushed that momentum with four straight goals to put the game out of reach at 18-6. Loars would get one final goal in the last minute of regulation, making the final 18-7.

The Pipers will play next on the road, traveling to Wartburg on Wednesday, March 11 for a 4:30 p.m. game. HU will then return home, hosting Concordia (Wis.) on the 14th.
