ST. PETER, MINN.—The Hamline University football team's first opponent of their three-game road stand was Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minnesota. The Pipers were within striking distance from start-to-finish, but Gusties running back Rohee Konde's 207 yards rushing for three touchdowns was too much to overcome in a 33-21 loss.
Despite the loss the Pipers threw for 195 yards against Gustavus's 158.
The loss sends Hamline's record to 3-3, 1-3 MIAC while Gustavus, who received two votes in the most recent AFCA Coaches Ranking, improves to 5-1, 3-1 MIAC.
Gustavus Adolphus 33, Hamline 21
Hamline's opening possession resulted in a score, as Matt Miller's 30-yard catch from Connor Leavens set them up at the Gusties 21 yard line. Terrell Jones would do the rest, as he carried the ball three times in the drive, which ended with a three-yard touchdown run that gave Hamline a 7-0 lead with 12:34 on the clock.
Both teams would trade punts before the Gusties tied things at 7-7 with 4:56 left in the first quarter, courtesy of Jake Breitback's 66-yard run. Gustavus took the lead for good when Jake Breitbach capped a 13-play drive with a four-yard touchdown run with 8:12 left in the second that made the score 14-7, where things stood at halftime.
Rohee Konde's big-play abilities were evident as he pushed Gustavus's lead to 20-7 with 13:18 left in the third quarter off a 38-yard run. Momentum began to shift in Hamline's direction after Leavens' 40-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Wilson narrowed the score to 20-14 with 9:14 left in the third frame. The Pipers defense kept Gustavus out of the end zone on their next series, instead allowing a 29-yard field goal that pushed the Gusties' lead to 23-14 with 5:19 left in the frame.
That momentum sailed when Gustavus recovered a Hamline fumble on the ensuing kick-off, and capitizled courtesy of Konde's four-yard touchdown run to push their lead to 30-14. The Pipers would score once more off Charlie Wilson's two-yard touchdown grab from Alec Ralph with 3:58 left in the fourth, but it wasn't enough in a 33-21 loss.
Charlie Wilson accumulated 81 yards receiving with two touchdowns on six receptions for Hamline, while quarterback Connor Leavens went 15-of-28 for 158 yards and one touchdown. Zach Griebel and Kaden Smith paced the Pipers defense with nine tackles each.
The Pipers will travel to Augsburg on Saturday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m.
