SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's hockey team's 2021-22 MIAC opener pitted them at TRIA Rink against Augsburg University on Friday night. Both teams entered the contest with votes on the November 8 USCHO Women's Division III Poll. All four goals scored in the contest occurred in the third period, where Hamline cruised to a 3-1 victory.
The Pipers improve to 2-1, 1-0 MIAC while Augsburg falls to 0-3, 0-1 MIAC.
Hamline 3, Augsburg 1
The opening stages of the third period consisted of a pair of quick goals, as Sophie Rausch set the tone at the 2:12 mark with a score off a feed from Cheyenne Abear that gave Hamline a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later at the 3:02 mark, Michaela Arnold gave the Pipers a 2-0 lead off an assist from McKenzie Gunderson.
Augsburg's Emily Cronkhite was called for checking at 9:58 of the third, as Hamline capitalized just :12 later courtesy of Elizabeth Valley at the 10:10 mark that made the score 3-0.
Lilia Scheid capitalized for Augsburg with an extra attacker with 1:00 left in the contest to narrow the deficit to 3-1, before Hamline held on to the victory.
Goalie Ava Bailey made 31 saves in net for the Pipers, while Mara McClain stopped 28 shots for Augsburg. Cheyenne Abear registered a pair of assists for Hamline. The Auggies held a slight 32-31 edge in shots.
The Pipers will travel to Augsburg tomorrow, Saturday, November 13 for a 4:00 p.m. game.
