SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The No. 3 seed Hamline University volleyball team embarked on their fifth all-time appearance in the MIAC Tournament on Wednesday, when they hosted No. 6 seed St. Benedict. The Pipers came through with their second-ever MIAC Tournament victory, and first since November 4, 2000 with a 3-2 decision over the Bennies.
The Pipers, who improve to 20-7 overall, will advance to the 2021 MIAC Semifinal where they'll travel to No. 2 seed Bethel on Friday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. St. Benedict ends their season with a 7-14 record.
Hamline 3, St. Benedict 2 (19-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14, 15-9)
Julianna Boyum came through with a team-best five kills in the opening set, when St. Benedict held a slim 20-18 lead before they iced things with a 5-1 run en route to a 25-19 victory. The Pipers never trailed in a 25-16 win in set two. The third set saw the score read 20-20 before St. Ben's responded with a 5-0 run behind a trio of Hamline attack errors, which locked a 25-20 victory, and a 2-1 match lead.
The Pipers overcame early St. Ben's leads in sets four and five, as they came from behind to notch 25-14, and 15-9 wins for a 3-2 match victory.
Rachel Rettmann and Julianna Boyum were all over the Pipers stat sheet with a season-high eight blocks a piece. The dynamic duo also tallied 12 kills each, while Sydney Larson paced Hamline with 13. Jenna Rubbelke notched a team-leading 20 digs and four service aces. Megan Rubbelke tallied 36 assists for Hamline, along with 19 digs.
