Pipers Defeat Cobbers in Dramatic Fashion 77-71 OT

SAINT PAUL, MINN-The Hamline University women's basketball team's final MIAC contest of the 2021 portion of their schedule pitted them against Concordia (Minn.) at Hutton Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Pipers tied the game 67-67 at the fourth-quarter buzzer courtesy of Iyanna Wieland's layup, who also registered a three-pointer at the second-quarter buzzer that gave them a 36-34 edge. Wieland came through in the clutch with the final four points of overtime to give the Pipers a 77-71 (OT) victory over Concordia (Minn.).

The Pipers push their win streak to five, and improve to 6-2, 5-1 MIAC, while the Cobbers fall to 1-6, 1-5 MIAC. This marks Hamline's longest win streak since 2019-20, when they strung together seven victories.

Hamline 77, Concordia 71 (OT)

Nine lead changes occurred in the contest, eight of which took place in the second half. Iyanna Wieland gave Hamline their first advantage of the contest with a three-pointer at the second-quarter buzzer to make the score 36-24.

The tail-end of regulation was all Emily Beseman, who dug the Cobbers out of a 65-59 hole with 2:22 remaining in regulation with seven points to close the frame. This includes a fastbreak layup with 0:07 on the clock that cut their deficit to 65-64. She was fouled on the play, and converted both free throws, which gave Concordia a 66-65 edge before they'd get the ball back again. The Pipers fouled them twice before Mary Sem registered one-of-two free throws to widen their lead to 67-65 with 0:06 on the clock, which gave Hamline's Wieland plenty of time to get her layup off at the buzzer that knotted things at 67-67.

The Cobbers converted just one field goal in the overtime session, where Wieland scored the game's final four points to ice Hamline a 77-71 (OT) victory.
