Strong shooting leads HU past Concordia

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline University men's basketball team (2-4, 1-2 MIAC) got back on track on Wednesday night, defeating the visiting Concordia Cobbers (0-3, 0-3 MIAC) 88-74 at Hutton Arena.

The Pipers shot well throughout the contest, finishing with a 54.4 percentage (31-57) from the field, which included draining 60.0% (9-15) from three. The team also hit an impressive 94.4% (17-18) of their free throws. The Cobbers shot above 40.0% from both the floor and the three-point line, but connected on six less field goals than HU.

Hamline got solid performances from a number of players throughout the game. Junior Luke Siwek scored a game-high 23 points, hitting three of four from beyond the arc and connecting on eight of his nine free-throw attempts. Junior Andrew Jackson set a new career-high with 18 points in the game, knocking down six of his 10 shots and all six of his free throws. Jackson also led the Pipers on the boards with eight rebounds.

Senior Michael Dillon and sophomore Marshall Holland each had full stat lines for the Pipers as well. Dillon scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting while adding three rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Holland tied his career-high with 12 points, adding six rebounds, three blocks, and two assists.

Senior Trey Prince chipped in with a season-high nine points and junior Jake Larson scored four of his own, but dished out a career-high eight assists.

The game started out back-and-forth, with the Pipers holding a 9-7 lead after the first four minutes. Hamline would then go on a 16-0 run, holding the Cobbers scoreless for a little over seven minutes. This stretched their lead to 25-7 with nine minutes to go. HU would gradually add to this lead in the remainder of the half, going into the break with a 49-29 advantage.

Concordia scored the first basket of the second half, but Larson and Prince answered with a pair of buckets to keep the momentum on Hamline's side. A three from sophomore Jake Veldman would put Hamline up by 27 (66-39) with 14 minutes left in the game, but from here the Cobbers slowly started to chip away at the Piper lead, getting the game within 11 with two minutes to go. Hamline did not give in, though, hitting their free throws down the stretch, which allowed them to maintain a double-digit lead for the final minutes, going on to win it 88-74.

The Pipers will look to get two wins in a row on Saturday when they travel to Saint Mary's to take on the Cardinals at 2:00 p.m. in Winona. Check the men's basketball schedule page for video and live stat links.
