Hamline records first shutout in program history in 15-0 win over Cornell

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline lacrosse team (6-4, 4-0 MWLC) improved to 4-0 in conference play in impressive fashion, recording the program's first-ever shutout with a 15-0 final over Cornell College (3-4, 0-3) on Friday afternoon at Klas Field.

The Piper defense was solid all game, holding the Rams to only six shots and forcing 17 turnovers. Senior goalie Alyssa Bryan-Jeffries stopped all three shots on goal that came her way (including two free position shots) and teamed up with first year goalie Justine Case to earn the shutout win.

Hamline also played tough in the middle of the field, thwarting the Rams on half (10-20) of their clear attempts, while connecting on all 11 of their own.

Eight different Pipers contributed to the 15 goals scored. Sophomore Taryn Leonard and senior Ashley Hessler each tallied six points in the contest, as Leonard scored four goals and added two assists, and Hessler did the opposite, scoring twice and assisting four others. Senior Maya Hernandez scored three goals and sophomore Michaela Arnold was the final HU player with multiple goals, scoring twice and dishing out an assist.

First year Kendra Haselow and senior Maria Lewis remained consistent on the draw, combining for nine of the team's 12 draw controls.

Leonard got the scoring going early for the Pipers, scoring less than a minute into the game. Hernandez scored on the very next possession to make it 2-0 and a goal from first year Analisa Aragon put HU up 3-0 within the first 10 minutes.

Goals from Leonard and Arnold made it 5-0 with 16:23 still to play in the first half, but then neither team was able to score for almost 14 straight minutes. Hessler scored within the last few minutes of the first frame, helping Hamline take a 6-0 lead into the break.

The Pipers unloaded for six goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half, with goals from Arnold, first year Clare Chambers, Leonard, Lewis, Hernandez, and Hessler.

Leonard, first year Emma Moe, and Hernandez would close out the scoring in the second portion of the half, making the final 15-0.

The Pipers will wrap up their conference regular season next week, first taking on Wartburg on Wednesday, April 21, before facing Monmouth on Saturday, April 24.
