SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University volleyball team hosted UW-Superior in a Tuesday-night non-conference bout. The Pipers came back from a 2-1 deficit for the second-straight match, and dug themselves out of a 14-9 hole in set five with an 8-1 run that iced them a 17-15 win and 3-2 match victory.
The five-set victory send Hamline's record to 11-4 while UW-Superior falls to 4-11.
Hamline 3, UW-Superior 2 (21-25, 25-9, 19-25, 25-22, 17-15)
The Pipers never led in the opening set, but tied the match at 19-19 before Superior closed the frame with a 6-2 run en route to a 25-21 victory. After Superior took a 4-3 lead in set two, the Pipers responded with a 14-1 run that gave them enough cushion in a 25-9 blowout. The Yellowjackets took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-19 win in set three before the Pipers stormed back.
Things didn't come with ease for Hamline in set four, as they dug themselves out of a 12-4 deficit. Sydney Larson engineered a Pipers 8-0 run later in the set with three kills, which gave her team a 19-16 lead. It was a lead Hamline didn't surrender as they tallied a 25-22 victory.
Set five required a comeback for Hamline as they trailed 14-9, where they responded with a 5-0 run to tie the match at 14-14. Superior took a 15-14 lead before a Brynn Hendrickson kill and a pair of Yellowjacket attack errors iced the Pipers a 17-15 victory.
Megan Rubbelke notched 49 assists along with four service aces and 15 digs for Hamline. She ran an offense that hit .197, and Sydney Larson had a lot to do with that as she notched 16 kills, 13 digs and two blocks. Rachel Rettmann contributed 13 kills for the Pipers, while Brynn Hendrickson was on her heels with 12.
Jenna Rubbelke led the Pipers defense with 23 digs, while Julianna Boyum was dominate at the net with five blocks, along with 12 kills.
The Pipers will return to action at home on Friday, October 1 against Augsburg at 7:00 p.m.
