SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's volleyball team hosted Macalester and defending NCAA Division III National Champion No. 12 UW-Eau Claire in a rare late-season triangular at Hutton Arena on Saturday. The Pipers prevailed with their second-straight five-set victory with a 3-2 (15-25, 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 16-14) decision over Macalester. UW-Eau Claire took care of business in the night cap with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18) win over Hamline.
The Saturday split gives Hamline a 6-20, 3-6 MIAC record.
Hamline 3, Macalester 2 (15-25, 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 16-14)
After hitting .0 in the opening frame, Hamline weathered the storm as they eclipsed a .218Â mark over the final four sets en route to a game total of .178. It helped the Pipers come from behind and grab a 2-1 match lead thanks to 10Â kills from Lindsay Eckelman at that point.
Both teams combined for just eight errors, and 32 kills in the fourth set, but it was Macalester who led from start-to-finish in a 25-21 win to tie the match at 2-2.
Four lead changes took place in the final frame, where Macalester was at match point with a 14-12 lead. The Pipers dug themselves out of that hole with a 4-0 run behind a pair of Riley Melby kills that sealed a 16-14 win, and 3-2 match victory.
Eckelman highlighted Hamline with a season-high 15 kills and six blocks. Julianna Boyum and Riley Melby also added season-highs with 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Boyum added five blocks to her stat line. Kaitlyn Kotek set them up with 30 assists along with 13 digs. Jenna Rubbelke led the way with four aces and 38 digs.
Adisa Preston paced Macalester with 14 kills, followed by 13 apiece from Eliza King and Gwen Wooten.
No. 12 UW-Eau Claire 3, Hamline 0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18)
The Blugolds never trailed throughout the first and third frames. The second set saw Hamline take a 13-12 lead, before UW-Eau Claire regained a slim edge and proceeded to end the set with a 5-1 run that sealed a 25-19 victory.
Boyum paced the Pipers offense with seven kills, while Jenna Rubbelke led the way with 14 digs. Kotek notched 12 assists for Hamline, who hit .097 in the match against UW-Eau Claire's .253 figure.
Charlie Nelson led Eau Claire with 28 assists and 21 digs. Avery Pennekamp paced the Blugold offense with 12 kills.
The Pipers will travel to Concordia (Minn.) on Friday, October 28 for a 7 p.m. game.
