ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The Hamline University football team participated in their third-straight Homecoming game on Saturday, when they made the short trip to No. 15 Bethel. The Pipers scored the game's first, and last points in a 49-14 loss to the Royals.
Hamline falls to 2-3, 0-3 MIAC, while Bethel improves to 4-1, 3-0 MIAC.
Bethel 49, Hamline 14
Ryan Kouri's team-leading third interception of the season on the game's second play at the Bethel 35-yard line resulted in a 28-yard return to the seven-yard line. Hamline found the end zone on their second play of the ensuing drive, courtesy of Ryder Hutton's seven-yard touchdown catch from Alejandro Villanueva that made the score 7-0 with 14:06 on the clock.
Hamline's fast start ignited a Bethel squad that registered seven-straight touchdowns that gave them a 49-7 lead with 8:25 left in the third quarter.
Carson Reinard registered the Pipers' second interception of the game at the 3:59 mark of the third quarter, and returned it 12 yards to the Hamline 42-yard line to set up his team's next score. Dorrayn Tapplin's 57-yard catch put Hamline at the Bethel one-yard line, where Villanueva punched it in on a rush to narrow the score to 49-14 with 2:44 left in the third frame.
Villanueva went 24-of-44 passing for 238 yards and one touchdown. Charlie Wilson netted 11 receptions for 56 yards, while Tapplin gained 59 yards on just three catches.
Reinard led the Pipers defense with seven tackles and one interception.
Bethel's Nic Krueger scored four touchdowns for Bethel, and added 62 yards on the ground. Royals quarterback Jaran Roste finished with 17-of-23 passing for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receivers Joey Kidder and Will Eliason also scored touchdowns for Bethel.
The Pipers will begin a three-game homestand against Gustavus Adolphus at Klas Field on Saturday, October 15 at 1 p.m.
