Men's Hockey Season Ends in 4-3 Loss to Gusties in MIAC Tournament First Round

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The No. 8 seed Hamline University men's hockey team saw its 2021-22 season come to an end in the MIAC Tournament First Round, as they dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 9 seed Gustavus Adolphus College at TRIA Rink on Wednesday night.

The Pipers finish the season with a 4-18-4 record, while the Gusties advance to the MIAC Quarterfinal against top-seeded Augsburg on Saturday night with a 6-15-4 mark.

Special teams gave Hamline a 2-0 lead, as Jackson Wille's shorthanded tally at 16:18 of the opening frame made the score 1-0, before Joe Collins converted a power-play goal at 3:06 of the second that extended things to 2-0.

This ignited a Gustavus team that out shot Hamline 18-8 from that point forward, which resulted in a 4-1 advantage in goals to seal a 4-3 victory. This included Brandon McNamara's game-winner at 16:23 of the third period that broke a 3-3 tie and made the score 4-3.

Wille finished the game with a pair of goals for Hamline, which also included a power-play tally at 17:42 of the second that gave his team a 3-2 lead heading into intermission before the Gusties registered two third-period goals to seal the win.

Shots were dead even at 22-22. Kevin Lake made 18 saves in net for the Pipers, while his counterpart Grant Boldt stopped 19 shots between the pipes for Gustavus.

The Pipers bid farewell to seniors Brandon Bissett, Brendan Sheehan, Tyler Nyman, and Jeron Hirschfeld.
