ST. PAUL, MINN.- The Hamline University women's basketball team hosted St. Benedict Monday night looking to match a win total last reached in the 1985-86 season. The Pipers did just that as they controlled the whole way to reach their 16th victory of the season as they knocked off the Bennies 65-55. The Pipers notched a school-record 18 wins in 1985-86.
The Pipers with the win continue to improve their record to 16-4, 13-3 MIAC. While the Bennies fall to 12-8, 9-8 MIAC.
Hamline 65 St. Benedict 55
The Pipers came out of the gate hot from three-point range making 6-of-7 attempts in the period including three from sophomore Larisa O'Neil who had four on the night. Hamline was able to ride that momentum to a 38-31 lead into the half.
The Pipers were able to stretch that lead out to 13 points after the third quarter, and closed out the Bennies with a 10-point win. Hamline shot a season best 55% from behind the arc to lead them to their fifth-straight win.
The Pipers were led in scoring, rebounding and assists by Senior Sophie Findell who finished with 14 points, eight boards and five assists. She was helped by 12 points from Lydia Lecher and Larisa O'Neil.
For the Bennies Carla Meyer led the way with 15 points, while Sophia Jones added 14 points, and Tori Szathmary contributed eight points with 10 boards.
The Pipers will look to continue their historic season Wednesday, Febraury 9 as they travel to battle Carleton for a 7 p.m. game.
