CLERMONT, FLA.—The Hamline University softball team came through with their second sweep of spring break in Clermont, Florida on Saturday evening with a 15-0 (5 innings) win over Lawrence, and a 7-2 decision over Buffalo State.
The Pipers improve 5-4. Lawrence fell to 0-11, while Buffalo State's loss sent them to 1-1 on the season.
Hamline 15, Lawrence 0 (5 Innings)
Theresa Klinnert's big day at the plate highlighted the Pipers, which began with a first-inning grand slam that made the score 4-0. Hamline utilized that momentum, as they proceeded to score 11 runs en route to a 15-0 victory.
Klinnert went 4-for-4 at the plate with six RBI and and three runs scored. Gabby Tuhy, Megan Ahlness, and Raelyn Costley each notched two hits for a Hamline squad that pounded 17 hits. Costley, Megan Rubbelke, and Kira Krueger each knocked in a pair of runs. Jenna Rubbelke scored two runs, and went 1-for-1 with a double.
Krueger and Dana Rosbacka combined to give up two hits, no walks, and no runs in the pitching circle for Hamline.
Hamline 7, Buffalo State 2
Two Bengals errors in the first inning propelled Hamline to a 2-0 lead. Buffalo State knotted the score at 2-2 with a run in the first and fourth innings.
Hamline responded with five unanswered runs. The surge began in the fifth inning when Megan Rubbelke led off with a single, stole second, and scored off Klinnert's double to widen the margin to 3-2. Klinnert scored off Tuhy's single to make the score 4-2. The Pipers played small ball in the sixth inning, when Costley walked and later scored from third base off Megan Rubbelke's sacrifice bunt to put the score at 5-2.
Gabby Cook led off with a seventh-inning double, before Savannah Johnson pinch ran for her and later scored on a wild pitch to extend things to 6-2. Tuhy walked on the play, and later came home on Lydia Lecher's double to end the scoring at 7-2.
Jenna Rubbelke, Klinnert, and Tuhy each registered two hits for Hamline.
Klinnert pitched a complete game, and allowed six hits and two runs while striking out three.
The Pipers will face Miami Hamilton (Ohio) and Keuka (NY) in Leesburg, Florida tomorrow, Sunday, March 20 at 12:15 p.m. (ET) and 2:30 p.m. (ET).
