Wildcats and Pipers Battle Their Way to a Split

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—Fresh off an eight-day hiatus from competition, the Hamline University softball team squared-off against St. Catherine (DH) at Meredith Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Pipers came up empty in a 6-0 loss to the Wildcats in game one, and rebounded with a 3-1 victory in the back end of the doubleheader.

The split sends Hamline's record to 13-10, 4-6 MIAC, while St. Catherine ends the day with a 15-11, 8-4 MIAC mark.

A bulk of the Wildcats' offense occurred in the third inning, where they registered four of their six total hits, and four-of-five runs in the contest. St. Catherine turned a Hamline error into a run in the fifth inning to make the score 5-0, before a double-steal attempt with runners on the corners in the seventh inning secured them a 6-0 victory.

Gabby Cook went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Jenna Rubbelke contributed a 2-for-3 outing for a Hamline offense that outhit St. Catherine 8-6.

Kira Krueger went the distance in the pitching circle for the Pipers. She gave up six hits, four runs, and struck out two.

The Wildcats set the tone with a first-inning run en route to a 1-0 lead before Hamline registered three unanswered runs to close the game. The fourth inning resulted in a pair of Pipers runs, where Megan Rubbelke led off with a walk, and advanced to third when Kira Krueger reached on an error. Rubbelke would score off Cook's single to tie the game 1-1, before Krueger came home on Theresa Klinnert's groundout to give Hamline a 2-1 lead.

Jenna Rubbelke widened the Pipers' lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning when she walked, moved to second on Amber Peterson's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on Megan Rubbelke's fielder's choice, and scored on Krueger's single.

Krueger went 2-for-3 at the plate for Hamline.

Dana Rosbacka allowed eight hits, one run (none earned), and one walk in the complete-game pitching effort for Hamline.

The Pipers will travel to Bethel for a single game on Thursday, April 21 at 4:30 p.m.
